The History of the Petanque Pitches in Devonport Park:

The pétanque pistes (or courts) in Devonport Park are a highly popular, community-driven sports addition situated right alongside the park's traditional bowling greens and tennis courts. [1, 3]

Key Features of the Devonport Park Pistes

• Community Driven Creation: The original gravel pistes were championed and constructed through the physical fundraising efforts of the Friends of Devonport Park to encourage accessible outdoor recreation for older residents and families.

• Layout and Composition: The dedicated playing area features a flat, compacted fine-gravel and stone-dust terrain designed specifically for the French boules game. It is framed by low wooden timber sleepers to keep the boules contained. [1]

• Casual Public Access: Unlike formal club grounds that require a booking, the pistes inside the main park are free and open for public use on a turn-up-and-play basis. Visitors simply need to bring their own set of metal boules (petanque balls) and a jack. [1]

Connection to Plymouth’s Broader Pétanque Scene

The sport has grown incredibly popular in the Plymouth area over recent years. While the Devonport Park courts remain an excellent casual, open-air spot for a friendly game, they served as a stepping stone for the city's broader competitive network: [1]

• The Club Legacy: The local club, Plymouth Pétanque, originally established its official hub nearby at the Brickfields Sports Centre in Devonport to accommodate larger regional tournaments across a 10-piste terrain. [1]

• Expansion: In August 2024, Plymouth City Council officially expanded the club's regional setup by building a brand-new, modern fenced-in pétanque facility down the road at Stonehouse Creek. [1]

Current concerns:

Unfortunately, the larger of the two petanque pitches is currently overgrown with grass and unuseable. It was unfortunately built with inadequate drainage and became sodden and flooded quickly. This is an area of concern for the FoDP who are working towards raising funds to have the pitch restored and made useable again.
